had been shopping at a reputable local jewellers looking for a traditional white gold men’s wedding band. I had settled on a 6mm white gold ring for £500 in a size Q and 1/2. It looked good but to be honest, as a watch guy I was struggling to reconcile spending that much money on something they had advised would require free annual re-plating just to stop the white gold coating tarnishing. They also advised me that due to the softness of gold it could also change shape or ovalise over time if I didn’t take it off regularly to protect it. Faced with the prospect of this jewellers ring now being a second high maintenance wedding related item in my life, I decided to reconsider this purchase and I’m so glad I did. The site looked quality and once I independently ascertained from other customer reviews on Trustpilot that it was a trustworthy site, my search began. The Newmanbands site is full of useful information that quickly allowed me to determine that a tungsten wedding band was right for me. It appeared to look identical online to the white gold ring I had almost purchased in store earlier that day, (apart from looking a little heavier on the bend/shoulder of the ring) it was less than 10% of the price, and for that it was apparently incredibly strong, heavy and all but impervious to scratches unless it came into contact with other tungsten or diamond items. For such a small investment it seemed ridiculous that I had been able to find something that suited my personal needs and I was worried that the item I was about to order from Newmanbands would disappoint me upon arrival. I ordered the Elie 6mm tungsten band at around 8pm on a Friday night (after first checking the facts about tungsten and titanium rings elsewhere on the net). The ring arrived first thing on Monday, packaged extremely professionally and complete with my order information and some leaflets including a thank you from Newmanbands for my purchase. The ring itself arrived in a small cardboard presentation box with the Newmanbands logo on it with the ring inside in a small pouch sitting on a small foam cushion. So far so good. When I picked up the ring pouch it felt surprisingly heavy for such a small piece of jewellery. I know that weight doesn’t always guarantee quality, but it was reassuringly high quality. My biggest concern was that on the website, this ring looked like it had a slightly brushed effect rather than the shine one might associate with precious metal rings like white gold, platinum, or palladium, and that not only would this not meet my expectations, but it would also guarantee my future wife’s disapproval. In reality, this ring looked identical to its precious metal counterparts I had seen in store at jewelers, and perhaps even because of the hardness of tungsten, it was smoother, shinier, and polished (probably because tungsten is so hard and scratch resistant). This seemed to make the ring almost slippery to the touch (in a good way), and very resistant to fingerprints, which was not the case with the white gold one I had almost purchased for over 12 times the price. If you can’t tell already, I am absolutely blown away by the quality and service of the item I received. From my perspective, the only advantage I can see that precious metal ring options have over what I purchased, (which was confirmed by my internet research), is the resale value, given that precious metals are a commodity and jewelry grade tungsten is not. So unless I plan on selling my wedding band at some point (which I don’t), I’m unlikely to benefit from it. Back to the ring itself, okay, it looks and feels high end, but given that I’m not a metalworker, what’s to say it’s not made of cheap stainless steel that passes for tungsten, or worse yet, an alloy that will turn my finger green? Well, several things actually: The ring is engraved on the inside to show that it is tungsten carbide. (This isn’t necessarily obvious, but my internet research has indicated that tungsten is so hard that in order to engrave it, it has to be laser engraved. The engraving on my ring appears to be laser engraved because it doesn’t have the look of traditional engraving techniques that remove material and leave a noticeable sharp edge around the lettering. So far so good. As I mentioned earlier, I love watches, preferably heavy stainless steel ones in an oversized bracelet style and in my opinion, nothing beats the feeling of a little weight on your wrist to make you feel like your money was well spent, (provided you do your research on what you’re buying and the value for money backs it up). So I compared the weight of a slightly wider 7mm titanium band I bought years ago from a jeweler in town. On the scale, the wider titanium band weighed 4 grams. The thinner 6mm Newmanband ring in tungsten weighed 12 grams. At 3 times the weight of titanium for a slightly thinner width ring, it’s just way too heavy to be stainless steel (and it feels that way too), and so I’m quite pleased that this is indeed a high-quality, jewelry-grade tungsten men’s wedding band. Purchasing this ring saved me a significant amount of money over a fairly basic white gold equivalent, and really, for me, I’m happier for it (especially since I plan to spend the difference on expanding my watch collection). The fit of the ring was my only other concern as Newmanbands only offer full sizes so having been sized to a Q and 1/2 by the jeweller I had to choose a Q or R so I took Newmanbands advice and went with the larger size R. The day I had purchased a ring in store it was cold and my fingers were cold and I had doubts that a Q and 1/2 might be too tight the rest of the time when it is warmer. The size R I ordered from Newmanbands fit perfectly, snug but no pinching or twisting. Good customer service and high quality products should be recognised and promoted in my way of thinking otherwise they will not stay in business and will be wiped out by the national chains. Based on my personal experience, I would recommend this company to anyone who is more focused on spending their money on a high quality, durable piece of jewelry than spending it to brag about how much it cost and where it was purchased. Your mileage may vary of course. If I were absolutely pushed to suggest possible improvements over the 100% positive experience I had, it would perhaps be to consider providing a jewelry grade box rather than just a cardboard box, as the icons on the Newmanbands page make the “presentation ring box” look like a traditional hinged jeweler style when it is not. That said, this would have a knock-on effect on the cost of purchasing and shipping the item. To me, it doesn’t really matter, but some customers might like the idea, or at least the option, for an additional cost, of something more durable to store their jewelry in when not being worn. I would also perhaps remove the icon that says “free shipping” since the customer is being charged for shipping the initial purchase, but the costs involved are so negligible that it’s really splitting hairs and is simply my way of demonstrating that I was thorough in my review and 100% recommendation of this company. By concluding the purchase with absolute confidence, this is a company that deserves to do well.
